Southerners love their folklore and traditions, but even more so, brides all across the south love ways to ward off rain on their wedding day. Will you bury the bourbon to ensure clear skies?

Burying the bourbon is a tradition unique to the south that, if done correctly, is supposed to ward off rain on the day of your wedding.

Now, those who swear by this Southern myth also stipulate that it has some very specific rules in order to make it work. You must visit your venue exactly a month before your wedding date to bury your bourbon.

Once the happy couple is on site where the bride and groom are to be married, the bottle, which must be completely full, has to be buried upside down, to ensure maximum weather persuasion.

According to some believers, however, this tradition has variations depending on exactly where in the south you choose to marry. These stipulations specify that the burying should be done on a day with weather you’d be happy to have on your wedding day.

The bottle size, however, can be large or small. We recommend basing the bottle on the size of your wedding party so there will be enough to toast your new nuptials once the bourbon has been unearthed.

Rain or shine, your bourbon bottle should be dug up post-ceremony and enjoyed with the bridal party, making this a win-win tradition no matter the skies!
