Kintsugi Cakes: Art of Imperfect Things

Kintsugi Cakes: The Art of Imperfect Things

Sometimes imperfect things can be even more beautiful than perfect ones. Take a look at the Japanese art of pottery repair known as Kintsugi.

Also known as Kintsukuroi, this is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed what powdered gold, silver or platinum, a method similar to the maki-e technique. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object rather than something to disguise.

In the age where everything is disposable, we just love the art of kintsugi. It is all about putting back together the broken pieces and there is just something so poetic about that. Like how finding your true love repairs all your missing and broken pieces as well.

One of our favorite emerging trends of 2019 is the gorgeous kintsugi cake. The way flawed elements in a person’s life have the potential to be transformed and overpowered. In a way, we are given the chance to show our true colors and turn those flaws into gold. Obviously, these cakes have given us some New Year’s resolution food for thought!
