Rock the Cosmos with Ultra Violet – 2018 Color of the Year

After years of of soft pastels and lush greens, Pantone is launching us into the cosmos by announcing Ultra Violet as the 2018 Pantone Color of the Year!

Ultra Violet follows last year’s Greenery, a zesty yellow-green shade, that encouraged people to take a deep breath, oxygenate and reinvigorate. The color experts at Pantone say that this deep purple shade was specially selected to evoke a counterculture flair, a grab for originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking. We feel this rich, blue-based purple is simultaneously rebellious and calming; both a signature shade for recently departed rock royals like Prince, Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie. This hue is deeply associated with mystics, healing and mindfulness.

Where 2017’s Greenery encouraged energy and new beginnings. Ultra Violet channels brilliant night skies, counter-culture black lights and the enigmatic edges of the color spectrum—giving us space to contemplate the unknown and point towards the future.

As Leatrice Eiseman, executive of the Pantone Color Institute explains, “We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination that is indigenous to Ultra Violet. From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.” And what better way to start a new beginning, a new chapter in your lives together than by accenting your wedding with Ultra Violet.

Officially known as PANTONE 18-3838, Ultra Violet is a color that was created from two shades that are diametrically opposed — blue and red — it brings them together to create something new and vibrant, according to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

We love how Pantone uses the words ‘visionary, new beginnings, expression and reflection’ when introducing 2018’s Color of the Year. Heading into the new year, many of us are ready for a fresh start, and Ultra Violet is perfectly symbolic of our desire for bold exploration and new beginnings.
