9 Tips to Determine Your Signature Wedding Style

Be honest. How many hours have you spent scrolling through Instagram and Pinterest trying to determine your signature wedding style? How many weeks swooning over different styles? Social media is an excellent source for finding inspiration. There is definitely a fine line between inspiration and being overwhelmed by possibilities.

Being as busy as you are, we want to help you stay focused on your wedding planning journey. We’ve got some great tips for using Pinterest as a wedding planning tool. First, you need to be clear on what your signature wedding style will look like.

Get your priorities in order

When you are deciding how to spend your budget, make a list of what is most important to you as a couple. It could be the food, entertainment, your dress, the signature cocktails, the photos, the flowers, or the venue. It’s likely that not all of these things are equally important to you. Identify what your must-haves are so you don’t find yourself with any regrets in the end. With regards to your budget, it’s a concept of give and take. If one thing is a higher priority on your list than the other, allocate more funds to your must have to achieve your signature wedding style.

Think about what defines your personality as a couple

Did you realize that your couple’s personality would play into the wedding planning process? You already know each other quite well. This first time you work together on a project of this magnitude, however. Set aside time to discuss what your strengths are and confirm that you’re on the same page about how your event vision for your signature wedding style.

Schedule time with your fiancé to determine your event vision

Work together to select a range of dates that work for both of you. Then schedule time to discuss priorities. Having this discussion early on will avoid conflicts and misunderstandings down the road. After all, you may have very different visions for your wedding. Communicating clearly this will make everything less stressful for both of you.

Write down 3 must-haves for your big day

When you’re ready to sit down to discuss priorities, each of you should write down your 3 wedding must-haves for the priority list for your signature wedding style. It’s a great place to start to have the discussion of where to allocate your budget. If one area it puts you over budget, talk it out and cut down on something that may not be as important to you both. Remember, if you take from one area, you must give somewhere else.

Take your venue into consideration

The question of where the wedding will take place is often not an easy answer. Especially if your families are from different cities, counties or states. There are so many things to take into consideration when choosing a venue, like the location, driving distance, traffic during certain times, parking, any special requirements your guests might have and seasonal weather conditions to name just a few. We have some tips for helping you choose the perfect venue.

Create a vision board

If you’re a visual person, creating a vision board will really bring your ideas to life. Take those magazine cut outs, paper goods and color swatches and put them up on a vision board. If that’s too much work, make yourself a Pinterest board! Pinterest is the perfect place to store and organize all of your wedding ideas. In fact, it is one of the best ways to find inspiration for your signature wedding style and sort them into different categories. Just remember, your wedding day should be uniquely you. Collect pins in your board that speaks to you and your fiancé, not just what is trendy.

Analyze your vision board for consistency

After you’ve got a decent amount of images and ideas, look for consistency. Is there an underlying theme, style or color that you’re seeing? If you’ve been selective about your pinning, the colors and styling that speaks to you should shine through. This is your signature wedding style!

Get a second opinion

If you’ve already started using Pinterest and Instagram, you probably know how great it is for discovering all these beautiful ideas. But beware, it can get a bit overwhelming sometimes. Pinterest is flooded with amazing ideas that you can easily become paralysed by the overload of inspiration. If you’re struggling to find consistency in your boards, get a second opinion from someone who matters, like your professional wedding planner, Maid of Honor or Bridesmaids. It’s really good to get out of your head and get a fresh perspective on things!

Follow your gut instinct, not the trends

There seems to be an endless amount of details that go into planning your wedding. Take it slow, stick to your plan and rely on your professional wedding planner for assistance. At the end of the day, your wedding style should feel right to you and your fiancé. It’s perfectly fine to get inspiration from the latest wedding trend but it should be something that you are comfortable with. It should be something you really, really want and not something that you “think” you have to follow because it’s what everyone is talking about or what’s trending. Your gut instinct will always help you make the right decision.
